Brighton’s Story: A Beacon of Light Within His Community
Brighton Odhiambo was a joyful, respectful, and kind-hearted 11-year-old boy whose light touched everyone he met. Born on September 15, 2013, in Homa Bay, Kenya, Brighton’s name means “a place of light.” True to his name, he was a beacon within his community—radiating joy, hope, and love wherever he went.
Brighton was a beloved member of the Kamgoma RDM Chapter, adopted and supported by Dual Star Academy of Dance, where he poured his heart into every activity. He was also an active participant in his SDA Church Choir and the Adventurers Club, where his talents and enthusiasm shone brightly. Whether dancing, singing, or telling stories, Brighton had a way of making others smile.
Brighton’s spirit of kindness and his love for learning reflected his deep aspirations. He dreamed of becoming a teacher, a role that suited his natural leadership, patience, and care for others. He was often lovingly called “brother teacher” by his peers—a testament to his heart for guiding and inspiring those around him.
Brighton’s life was full of joy and promise. He showed us how to live with purpose, love with sincerity, and shine brightly in the service of others.
A Tragic Loss That Shook Us All
On Sunday, December 15, 2024, Brighton was participating in two events that reflected his passions: the RDM End-of-Year Christmas Party and Performance and his SDA Church Choir’s Recording Session. Out of his commitment and dedication, he traveled back and forth between these celebrations, embodying his love for dance, song, and his community.
Tragically, during this time, Brighton was chased away by older boys, and multiple eyewitnesses reported acts of violence against him. Later, his body was discovered hanging from a tree. While local authorities have ruled his death a suicide, the accounts of eyewitnesses raise troubling questions that cannot be ignored.
Brighton’s family is heartbroken and is calling for justice for their son. His loss has deeply shaken his family, the Kamgoma Chapter, and the entire RDM community.
